TSMC's HPC Revenue Share by Quarter, 1Q24 to 3Q26 (As Reported)

TSMC reports revenue by platform, and the high-performance-computing (HPC) platform went from 46% of net revenue in the first quarter of 2024 to 68% in the third quarter of 2026, while smartphones fell from 38% to 21%. This feature sets out eleven quarters of those reported shares and explains why HPC is not the same as AI.

One row per quarter, oldest first, from TSMC's quarterly management reports, each of which gives the quarter, the previous quarter and the same quarter a year earlier; the 2024 rows come from the 2025 reports. Revenue is NT$ and US$ as TSMC reports each; the two differ because of exchange rates. Platform shares are rounded to whole percentages by TSMC, so a row can sum to 99% or 101%. Digital consumer electronics (1% or 2%) and Others (2%) are in the reports but left out of the table. The table gives TSMC's shares, not revenue by platform, and no totals or per-platform revenue are ours. Figure labels: how they work.

From 46% to 68%

TSMC, a pure-play contract chipmaker that manufactures chips for other companies,8 splits net revenue into platforms. Its high-performance-computing platform was 46% of net revenue in the first quarter of 2024 and 68% in the third quarter of 2026, the highest in the table.71 The rise was not steady: HPC slipped from 60% in 2Q25 to 57% in 3Q25 and 55% in 4Q25, then climbed to 61%, 66% and 68% over the next three quarters.654321 In 3Q26 TSMC reported net revenue of NT$1,494.24 billion (US$46.72 billion), up 17.6% from the previous quarter and 50.9% from a year earlier in NT$, and said HPC revenue rose 22% sequentially.1 It had reported HPC up 20% in both 1Q26 and 2Q26, and flat in 3Q25.325

The smartphone platform moved the other way as a share: 38% in 1Q24, 21% in 3Q26.71 A falling share is not a falling revenue. TSMC reported smartphone revenue up 10% sequentially in 3Q26, after declines of 4% in 2Q26 and 11% in 1Q26.123 Internet of Things and automotive were 4% each in 3Q26.1

HPC is not the same as AI

The management reports give high-performance computing as a single line and don't break it down.1 TSMC has a separate and, in its own words, narrow term, "AI accelerator" (see AI Accelerators With the Most HBM per Chip for the accelerators themselves), for which it has guided a compound annual growth rate in the mid-to-high 50s percent from 2024 to 2029, as the company's investor-relations director restated on its October 15, 2026 call; the CEO answered that demand "is very extremely robust" and that the growth rate "probably will be higher".9

Server CPUs are outside that definition. Asked whether the growing demand for CPUs in agentic AI would be counted, TSMC's CEO said it isn't included "because we cannot identify which CPU used in the conventional server CPU or AI server CPU", and that TSMC would stick to its "very narrow definition".9 TSMC doesn't publish AI-accelerator revenue as a share of net revenue in the reports we read, so the HPC line can't be converted into one, and a claim that AI is 68% of TSMC wouldn't follow from these figures.

The technology mix beside it

Platform and process node are separate cuts of the same revenue. In 3Q26 TSMC reported that 2-nanometer was 8% of wafer revenue, up from 3% in 2Q26 and 0% in 3Q25, with 3-nanometer at 33%, 5-nanometer at 28% and 7-nanometer at 10%; advanced technologies (7-nanometer and below) were 79% of wafer revenue.1 TSMC doesn't publish a platform-by-node table in these reports, so the two mixes can't be combined here.

What TSMC said on the call

On the same call, TSMC's CFO reiterated a 2026 capital budget of US$60 billion to US$64 billion, and said capital spending from 2026 to 2028 is expected to be significantly higher than in the past three years.9 The CEO said AI-related demand is supported by AI accelerators, the emergence of agentic-AI CPUs and continued networking demand, and that demand "is still far above our capability today to supply".9 These are the company's statements about its own plans and demand, quoted as given; they are not forecasts by this site.

Reading the numbers

Three limits apply. Shares are rounded to whole percentages, so small changes can be rounding. A platform share is a share of a total that is itself growing quickly, so HPC's 22% sequential growth in 3Q26 is the better measure of its momentum than the 2-point share gain. And the platform label is TSMC's own grouping, not a measure of whether a chip runs AI. This post covers revenue as TSMC reports it and carries no share-price or valuation information.
